Dental Filling Aftercare Instructions | Mint Hill Smiles

Tooth-colored fillings set immediately,

which means you can use your tooth normally as soon as any numbness wears off. Some mild sensitivity afterward is common and usually short-lived. Here is what to expect.

Right After Your Filling

  • – If you are numb, wait until the numbness fully wears off before eating so you do not bite your cheek, lip, or tongue. This usually takes one to three hours.
  • – Your tooth-colored filling is fully hardened before you leave, so there is no waiting period to eat once sensation returns.
  • – It is normal for the tooth to feel sensitive to hot, cold, or pressure for a few days to a couple of weeks.

Eating

  • – You can eat normally once numbness wears off.
  • – If the tooth is sensitive, you may be more comfortable avoiding very hot or cold foods for a few days.
  • – Chew on the opposite side for the first day if the tooth feels tender.

What Is Normal and What Is Not

  • – Temporary sensitivity to temperature and pressure is normal and should steadily improve.
  • – If your bite feels uneven or high, meaning the tooth hits before your other teeth when you close, call us. This is a quick adjustment and it is important not to leave it, because an uneven bite can cause prolonged soreness.
  • – If sensitivity gets worse over time rather than better, or you develop lingering pain or a toothache, call us.

When to Call Us

Call (704) 323-7577 if your bite feels high, if sensitivity worsens after a couple of weeks, or if you develop sharp or lingering pain.
