We take X-rays on the appropriate schedule for your risk level. Not every patient needs X-rays at every visit, but most patients need updated X-rays annually or every other year depending on their cavity history, gum health, and other factors. We use digital X-ray sensors that expose patients to significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays, and every set of images is analyzed by our AI x-ray analysis software before the doctor reviews them with you. This flags areas of concern and measures bone levels so that nothing subtle gets missed. We show you what we see on screen so the findings are visual and clear rather than abstract.
We take intraoral photos. Our hygienists use intraoral cameras to photograph areas of concern such as gum recession, wear, early decay, cracks forming around old fillings, anything that warrants documentation or discussion. These photos become part of your record and allow us to track changes over time at every subsequent visit.
We do a complete periodontal evaluation. At every cleaning appointment, our hygienists measure the depth of the pockets surrounding each of your teeth using a small probe. Measurements that are three millimeters or less are healthy and measurements four millimeters or greater indicate gum disease. We also note bleeding, which is a sign of active infection in the gum tissue. Healthy gums do not bleed when probed. If we find anything outside of normal, we explain what it means and what the options are before you leave.
We screen for oral cancer. Every cleaning appointment at Mint Hill Smiles includes a soft tissue evaluation of the lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of the mouth, and throat. Oral cancer is significantly more treatable when caught early and a routine professional screening is one of the most reliable ways to catch it. This takes less than two minutes and most patients barely notice it happening.
We clean your teeth thoroughly. Our hygienists remove calculus and buildup from the tooth surfaces and above the gumline. This is something brushing and flossing cannot accomplish no matter how hard you try. After the scaling is complete, we polish the teeth to remove surface staining from coffee, tea, and other foods.
We offer fluoride varnish. At every appointment we offer fluoride varnish, a professionally applied coating that strengthens enamel and helps protect against cavities. It takes one minute to apply and is available for patients of all ages. Many insurance plans cover it and Brush365 members get 15% off as part of their plan. If fluoride is not for you we have an alternative called hydroxyapatite varnish that will also help prevent cavities by strengthening your enamel.
The doctor reviews everything with you. Before you leave, one of our doctors reviews your X-rays, your periodontal charting, your intraoral photos, and any clinical notes from the hygienist. If anything needs attention the doctor explains what they see and what the options are. If everything looks great, they tell you that too.
