Check Up & Cleaning · Mint Hill, NC

Whether it has been six months or six years since your last dental visit

You do not have to feel embarrassed calling us. We mean that. Life happens. Kids, jobs, moves, costs, anxiety, a bad experience somewhere else. There are a hundred real reasons people fall behind on dental care and not a single one of them is worth feeling ashamed about. What matters is that you are here now and you are ready to take care of yourself. We will handle the rest.

We see patients coming back to the dentist after two years, five years, and sometimes twenty years every single week. We never make those appointments uncomfortable. We start where you are, we tell you what we find, and we build a plan that makes sense for your situation. No lectures. No guilt trips. No judgment.

The Reality

What Actually Happens at a Cleaning Appointment at Mint Hill Smiles

Most patients are surprised by how thorough our cleaning appointments are compared to what they have experienced elsewhere. A cleaning at MHS is not just a polish and a wave goodbye. It is a comprehensive evaluation of everything going on in your mouth, caught early enough to do something about it while the answer is still straightforward.

Here is exactly what happens.

We start with a conversation. Before anything else, we ask how you are doing, what has changed since your last visit, and whether you have any concerns. If you have been away for a while, we ask what brought you back so we can address it directly. This is not small talk. It is how we figure out what this appointment needs to accomplish for you specifically.

We take X-rays on the appropriate schedule for your risk level. Not every patient needs X-rays at every visit, but most patients need updated X-rays annually or every other year depending on their cavity history, gum health, and other factors. We use digital X-ray sensors that expose patients to significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays, and every set of images is analyzed by our AI x-ray analysis software before the doctor reviews them with you. This flags areas of concern and measures bone levels so that nothing subtle gets missed. We show you what we see on screen so the findings are visual and clear rather than abstract.

We take intraoral photos. Our hygienists use intraoral cameras to photograph areas of concern such as gum recession, wear, early decay, cracks forming around old fillings, anything that warrants documentation or discussion. These photos become part of your record and allow us to track changes over time at every subsequent visit.

We do a complete periodontal evaluation. At every cleaning appointment, our hygienists measure the depth of the pockets surrounding each of your teeth using a small probe. Measurements that are three millimeters or less are healthy and measurements four millimeters or greater indicate gum disease. We also note bleeding, which is a sign of active infection in the gum tissue. Healthy gums do not bleed when probed. If we find anything outside of normal, we explain what it means and what the options are before you leave.

We screen for oral cancer. Every cleaning appointment at Mint Hill Smiles includes a soft tissue evaluation of the lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of the mouth, and throat. Oral cancer is significantly more treatable when caught early and a routine professional screening is one of the most reliable ways to catch it. This takes less than two minutes and most patients barely notice it happening.

We clean your teeth thoroughly. Our hygienists remove calculus and buildup from the tooth surfaces and above the gumline. This is something brushing and flossing cannot accomplish no matter how hard you try. After the scaling is complete, we polish the teeth to remove surface staining from coffee, tea, and other foods.

We offer fluoride varnish. At every appointment we offer fluoride varnish, a professionally applied coating that strengthens enamel and helps protect against cavities. It takes one minute to apply and is available for patients of all ages. Many insurance plans cover it and Brush365 members get 15% off as part of their plan. If fluoride is not for you we have an alternative called hydroxyapatite varnish that will also help prevent cavities by strengthening your enamel.

The doctor reviews everything with you. Before you leave, one of our doctors reviews your X-rays, your periodontal charting, your intraoral photos, and any clinical notes from the hygienist. If anything needs attention the doctor explains what they see and what the options are. If everything looks great, they tell you that too.

New Patients vs. Returning Patients

If this is your first visit to Mint Hill Smiles, your appointment will be scheduled as a comprehensive new patient exam and will run approximately 90 minutes. This longer appointment gives us the time to do a full evaluation including X-rays, photographs, periodontal charting, an oral cancer screening, and a thorough cleaning. We’ll also get to have a real conversation about your dental history, your goals, and anything you are concerned about.

If you are a returning patient coming back after some time away, we schedule accordingly based on what we know and what we need to find out. We will tell you on the phone how long to expect when you schedule so you can plan your day.

How Often Should You Come In

For most patients, a cleaning and exam every six months is the right interval. This schedule is based on the rate at which plaque calcifies into tartar on tooth surfaces and the frequency at which small problems become bigger ones between professional visits.

For patients with a history of cavities, gum disease, or higher-risk factors like diabetes or dry mouth from medications, more frequent visits may be recommended. For patients with exceptionally stable oral health and low risk over many years, we may discuss whether an annual visit is appropriate. We make this call based on your actual data rather than a one-size-fits-all policy.

Patients who have been treated for gum disease come in every three to four months for gum management appointments rather than standard cleanings, because the bacteria responsible for gum disease reestablish at the site approximately every twelve weeks. We cover this in more detail on our gum disease page.

If You Have Not Been in a While

We want to say this one more time because it’s important: there is no point at which you have been away too long to come back. We have seen patients who have not been to a dentist in fifteen years. We have seen patients who avoided dental care their entire adult lives because of anxiety or cost or both, and who finally walked through our door not knowing what to expect.

What they found was a team that met them exactly where they were. Some of those patients needed significant restorative work. Some just needed a cleaning and left with a clear bill of health. Either way, the appointment itself was not the ordeal they had built it up to be in their minds.

If you are in that category, if the thought of calling makes you nervous because you already know it has been too long, call us anyway. Tell us it has been a while. We will handle it with care.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Cleanings and Check-Ups

For patients with healthy gums a cleaning is generally comfortable, though some patients feel mild sensitivity during the removal of calculus near the gumline. For patients with gum disease or significant buildup, a cleaning can be more sensitive in the affected areas. We always communicate before we start if we expect a visit to be more involved than usual so there are no surprises, and we adjust our approach based on your feedback throughout the appointment.
Please do not let that stop you from calling. Every member of our team has seen patients at every stage of dental health and every gap in care. Our job is to help you, not to make you feel worse about where things stand. The first appointment is always about getting a clear picture and building a path forward.
New patient appointments run approximately 90 minutes. Returning patient appointments for a standard cleaning and exam typically run 60 minutes depending on your X-ray schedule and what the hygienist finds. We build in time to do the appointment thoroughly rather than rushing you out the door.
No. X-rays are taken on a schedule based on your specific risk factors and history. Most patients need bitewing X-rays annually and a full set of X-rays every three to five years. Patients with active decay, a history of significant dental problems, or gum disease may need more frequent imaging. We always explain why we are recommending X-rays at a given visit.
We welcome patients without insurance at every appointment. Our Brush365 in-house membership plan covers two cleanings, two exams, and all necessary X-rays annually for $99 at enrollment plus $25 per month. It is the simplest and most affordable way to stay on top of your preventive care without the unpredictability of insurance. Ask us about it when you call.
