When we opened Mint Hill Smiles in 2019, we had zero patients on the schedule and a lot of debt.

What we also had was a question we kept coming back to: if this practice grows the way we believe it can, what do we want to do with that growth?

The answer was not a bigger building. It was not a second location. It was not a number on a balance sheet.

It was people.

We set a goal to donate 5,000 free smiles to our community by 2030 and we tied that goal directly to the growth of the practice, because every new patient, every treatment plan completed, every Google review that helps someone find us moves us closer to the capacity to give more. This goal is not a side project. It is the point.

We are at 1,152 lives changed and $69,241 in donated dentistry. We are just getting started.

What a Free Smile Actually Means

A free smile is a dental procedure provided at no charge to someone who cannot afford the care they need. It is a cleaning for someone who has not seen a dentist in years because they lost their insurance and cannot afford to pay out of pocket. It is an extraction that gets someone out of pain they have been managing with over the counter medication for months.

Every donated smile represents a real person whose day, whose health, and whose confidence changed because they came to us. Some of those patients become regular patients afterward. Most do not. Either way, the care was the right thing to do and we are grateful we had the capacity to provide it.

How We Get There

The 5,000 free smiles goal is funded through two main channels, and both connect back to the growth of the practice.

Smiles From the Heart is our annual free dentistry event in Mint Hill. We open our doors to community members for free care and provide as much treatment as possible in a single day. Our team, their families, and other dental professionals from around the state volunteer their time. Our entire office runs at capacity for a cause rather than for revenue. Dental mission trips take our team internationally to communities with little or no access to dental care. We have completed three trips to the Dominican Republic and each one has changed not just the patients we treated but the team members who went. The experience of providing care in a resource-limited environment with patients who have often waited years to see a dentist reshapes how our whole team shows up in Mint Hill.
