Managing Sensitivity While Whitening
Even with take-home whitening, some patients experience sensitivity, particularly in the first few sessions. Here are the most effective ways to manage it.
Use a smaller amount of gel than you think you need. More gel is not more effective, it just increases the likelihood of irritation and gum contact.
Whitening every other night instead of every night during the first few weeks gives your teeth time to recover between sessions and significantly reduces sensitivity for most patients.
Use a sensitivity toothpaste that contains potassium nitrate, like Sensodyne, for a few days before you start whitening and throughout the process. You can also apply a small amount inside the trays before your whitening session to pre-treat the enamel.
If sensitivity is still significant, slow down further. Whitening twice a week instead of nightly still produces results over a longer timeline, and the results last just as long.
