Teeth Whitening in Mint Hill NC - Pearly Whites for Life at Mint Hill Smiles

Teeth Whitening in Mint Hill NC

Almost every patient we see wants whiter teeth. It is one of the most common things people bring up at their cleaning appointments.

Our teeth darken over time from coffee, tea, red wine, food, and the natural aging process. A brighter smile makes most people feel more confident. Whitening works, it is safe when done correctly, and we offer a few different ways to approach it depending on your goals and your budget.

But we want to have a conversation with you first about why we do not offer in-office whitening, why the evaluation step before whitening matters more than most people realize, and what your options actually look like at Mint Hill Smiles.

Teeth Whitening in Mint Hill NC

Why We Do Not Offer In-Office Whitening

In-office whitening, the kind where a high-concentration gel is applied chairside and often activated with a light, is one of the most commonly marketed dental services. It is also one that we do not offer because of the sensitivity it causes for many patients.

The concentration of bleaching gel used in in-office whitening is significantly higher than anything available for home use, and for a large portion of patients it causes severe post-treatment sensitivity. Not mild sensitivity, either. The kind of sensitivity that makes eating and drinking painful for days, that makes cold air feel like a nerve was touched, and that leaves patients wishing they had not done it. The whitening effect is real but you can achieve the same level of whitening at home with a consistent routine. For patients who are prone to sensitivity, the in-office experience can be miserable.

We made a deliberate decision to not offer it because we could not, in good conscience, recommend a treatment that produces that level of discomfort in a significant number of patients. Our approach to whitening is built around home use with professional materials and custom-fitted trays, which gives you control over the pace, produces excellent results, and can be done without the sensitivity spike that chairside treatment often causes.

Before Whitening: What the Evaluation Step Is Actually For

This is the part of the whitening conversation that nobody else is probably telling you.

Not every stain on a tooth is a dietary stain. Some of the discoloration patients notice in their teeth is caused by things that whitening will not fix, and in some cases, things where whitening can actually cause harm.

Cavities produce dark spots in the tooth structure. Whitening bleach applied over active decay does not brighten the discoloration, it drives the bleach into unhealthy, demineralized tooth structure and can cause a lot of sensitivity and damage. A dark spot from decay needs to be treated with a filling, not masked with whitening.

Old composite fillings and crowns do not whiten. The bleaching process only works on natural tooth enamel. If you have visible restorations in your smile like white fillings, crowns, or veneers, whitening will brighten the natural teeth around them but the restorations themselves will stay the same color, potentially creating a mismatch that looks worse than before.

Gum disease changes the color of the gum tissue and can contribute to discoloration at the gumline where bacteria accumulate. Whitening over active gum disease is not just ineffective for those areas, it can drive bleach into unhealthy, inflamed tissue and cause damage.

This is why we do not hand out whitening trays without an evaluation first. We want to make sure the discoloration you are seeing is something whitening can actually address, and that the health of your teeth and gums is ready for it. A cleaning and exam before whitening is not a bureaucratic hurdle, it is how we make sure your results are good and that we are not doing harm in the process.

Your Whitening Options at Mint Hill Smiles

Once we have confirmed your mouth is healthy and ready for whitening, here is what we offer.

Pearly Whites for Life

$299

This is our flagship whitening program and the one we recommend most often for patients who want to maintain consistently bright teeth over time.

We use our digital intraoral scanner to take a precise digital scan of your teeth and fabricate custom-fitted whitening trays from that scan. These trays fit your teeth exactly and are not a generic tray shape. The fit matters because it keeps the gel in contact with the tooth surface where it belongs.

You take the trays home with your initial supply of whitening gel and use them at your own pace, which is typically 30 minutes a night after brushing and flossing, with a small amount of gel placed inside each tray. Most patients see noticeable results within one to two weeks.

Here is what makes this program different from simply buying a whitening kit: every time you come in for your regular cleaning at Mint Hill Smiles, we refresh your gel supply. You keep whitening at whatever pace works for you, touching up when you notice things starting to fade, without paying for a new kit every time. For as long as you are a patient here, Pearly Whites for Life keeps your whitening going.

For patients who whiten consistently and come in for their regular cleanings, this is the most cost-effective whitening program available. The $299 investment covers your custom trays, your first supply of gel, and the refills at your cleanings.

Opalescence Go

$109

If you are not ready to commit to the full custom tray program or you want to try professional whitening before investing in trays, Opalescence Go is a great option. It is a set of 10 prefilled whitening trays that come in ready-to-use upper and lower sets. There is no custom fitting required and the tray material is flexible enough to conform to most tooth shapes well.

Opalescence Go is also ideal for patients who travel frequently and want a whitening option that does not require keeping trays and gel separate, or for patients who want a fresh set of treatments before a special occasion without going through the full tray process.

The results are good and the gel is professional strength which is more effective than most over-the-counter options at a price point that makes it accessible.

Crest White Strips: An Honest Mention

We want to say something that might surprise you coming from a dental office: we do not have a problem with Crest White Strips as a starting point.

If you have never whitened before and you want to see how your teeth respond to whitening before committing to anything professional, strips are a good way to dip a toe in. The concentration of bleaching gel is lower than professional products, which means the results take longer and may be less dramatic, but it also means the sensitivity risk is lower, which can be helpful for figuring out how sensitive your teeth are before stepping up to professional treatment.

What we would not use strips for is long-term whitening maintenance. The fit is not custom, the coverage is not even, and the results are not as consistent or as lasting as professional options. But as an introduction, they are fine. If you try them and like what you see, come talk to us about stepping up to Pearly Whites for Life.

Managing Sensitivity While Whitening

Even with take-home whitening, some patients experience sensitivity, particularly in the first few sessions. Here are the most effective ways to manage it.

Use a smaller amount of gel than you think you need. More gel is not more effective, it just increases the likelihood of irritation and gum contact.

Whitening every other night instead of every night during the first few weeks gives your teeth time to recover between sessions and significantly reduces sensitivity for most patients.

Use a sensitivity toothpaste that contains potassium nitrate, like Sensodyne, for a few days before you start whitening and throughout the process. You can also apply a small amount inside the trays before your whitening session to pre-treat the enamel.

If sensitivity is still significant, slow down further. Whitening twice a week instead of nightly still produces results over a longer timeline, and the results last just as long.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Whitening

Results vary based on the natural color of your teeth, the type and degree of staining, and how consistently you use the whitening product. Most patients see a noticeable improvement.
This depends on your diet, habits, and how consistently you maintain the whitening. Patients who drink coffee, tea, or red wine regularly, and do not maintain with touch-ups, will see more fading than patients who avoid heavy stainers. The Pearly Whites for Life program is specifically designed to make maintenance easy and continuous.
No. Professional whitening only affects natural tooth enamel. Existing restorations will not change color with whitening. If you have visible restorations in your smile zone and want to whiten, we will discuss how to sequence treatment so everything looks consistent when you are finished, which may mean replacing restorations after whitening to match the new tooth color.
We recommend waiting until after pregnancy and breastfeeding to begin or resume whitening, as a precautionary measure. There is limited research on the topic but erring toward caution is our standard recommendation.
Possibly, with modifications. We evaluate sensitivity as part of the whitening consultation and recommend a protocol that minimizes risk like lower concentration gel, shorter wear time, less frequent sessions, and pre-treatment with sensitivity products. Some patients with significant existing sensitivity are better candidates for Opalescence Go than for nightly tray whitening, and we will tell you what we think makes sense for you specifically.
