Dental Crown Aftercare Instructions | Mint Hill Smiles

At Mint Hill Smiles we mill most crowns in-house and place them the same day,

removes tartar and bacteria from below the gumline to treat gum disease and help your gums heal. Because we clean deeper than a routine cleaning reaches, it is normal to have some soreness and sensitivity

Right After Your Crown

  • – If you are numb, wait until the numbness wears off before eating so you do not bite your cheek, lip, or tongue.
  • – Because your crown is permanently cemented the same day, there is no waiting period beyond letting numbness pass.
  • – Some sensitivity to hot and cold and some tenderness in the gums around the crown is normal for a few days.

Eating

  • – Once numbness wears off, you can eat normally.
  • – For the first day, it is reasonable to favor the other side and avoid very hard or very sticky foods while everything settles.

Caring for Your Crown Long-Term

  • – Brush and floss your crown exactly like a natural tooth. The margin where the crown meets your tooth at the gumline is where decay can start, so keeping it clean is the most important thing to keep it healthy and lasting a long time.
  • – Flossing around the crown is important. If flossing catches, shreds, or feels different around the crown, let us know.
  • – If you grind or clench your teeth, a nightguard protects your crown and the rest of your dental work from the forces that crack teeth.

What Is Normal and What Is Not

  • – Mild temperature sensitivity and gum tenderness for a few days is normal.
  • – If your bite feels high or uneven, call us for an adjustment.
  • – If you have lingering pain, persistent throbbing, or the crown feels loose, call us.

FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

With a same-day crown that is permanently cemented during your visit, you can eat once any numbness wears off. Favoring the other side and avoiding very hard or sticky foods for the first day helps everything settle comfortably.
Some sensitivity to hot and cold and tenderness in the surrounding gums is normal for a few days after a crown. It should steadily improve. If sensitivity worsens or you develop lingering pain, call us.
Call us for an adjustment. It won’t get better on its own. A crown that sits even slightly high can cause soreness and jaw discomfort, and adjusting it takes only a few minutes.
Brush and floss your crown just like a natural tooth. Pay attention to the gumline where the crown meets your tooth, since that edge is where tooth decay can begin. Daily flossing around the crown is important.
With good care, crowns can last many years. Avoiding chewing ice and very hard objects, wearing a nightguard if you grind your teeth, and keeping the margin clean all help your crown last as long as possible.
If you grind or clench your teeth, a custom nightguard is strongly recommended. Grinding puts significant force on crowns and natural teeth alike, and a nightguard protects your investment.
Call us right away at (704) 323-7577. Do not chew on that side, and keep the crown if it comes off so we can evaluate whether it can be recemented.
